Addiction Philosophy

The Psychology On Hay team are passionate about helping people struggling with all forms of addiction. We are a highly experienced team familiar with all aspects of addiction. A strong knowledge of current findings from the field of neuroscience forms the foundation of our approach. Neuroscience is seen as highly complimentary to psychotherapy and more general treatment planning. Our practitioners ensure that they maintain up to date knowledge of current research findings in this and other areas.

The field of neuroscience accepts addiction as being significantly dissimilar from a habit.   In considering this difference, the addicted brain is understood as eliciting powerful drives that are difficult to resist, and in extreme cases all consuming. These neurological changes shine light upon the irrational, compulsive and chronically relapsing nature of addiction that creates so much frustration and misunderstanding.

Education

We believe in education as a way to empower people to come to grips with addiction. Together we will support you in understanding the problem with the aim of finding effective solutions. We believe that through a refined understanding of the addictive process and the neurological changes mastery over the problem can be developed.

Recovery

As part of the recovery process we have a respect for the need to identify and attend to the underlying issues that may have contributed to the development of the problem. Rather than simply addressing the addiction related behaviours, attending to these underlying factors encourages lasting recovery.

We understand that shame contributes to people failing to seek out or continue with therapy. Facing this shame is a crucial part of recovery. Within therapy honesty, openness and curiosity are central components. A concerted effort is made to develop a trusting and supportive relationship, in which we will work with you throughout the struggle towards positive change. We have a deep respect for the confronting and challenging nature of the recovery process. The journey towards change may have ups and downs. This is expected. We will support you throughout this process no matter how difficult it may become. When it becomes tough, the important goal is to not give up because change is possible. We believe in everyone’s ability to action positive change in his or her life.

In support of you and your journey towards positive change we utilise a range of psychotherapy options, can offer a highly confidential service, assist in referrals to other specialist agencies and doctors, and can support partners and family members.
